5 Tips for DIY Garage Door Maintenance

A well-maintained garage door is key to keeping your home secure and your garage door running smoothly for years.

Regular garage door maintenance helps prevent small issues from escalating into costly garage door repairs or a garage door replacement. With a few simple tools and a bit of DIY effort, our Sydney based Garage Door Repair expert and founder, Avi Ittah, is going to tell you how you can keep your garage door in top shape and avoid unnecessary expenses on garage door repairs.

Here are Avi’s tips for DIY garage door maintenance and to make sure your door stays in optimal condition.

1. Regularly Inspect Your Garage Door

Make it a habit to thoroughly inspect your garage door at least twice a year. Check all components, such as the tracks, hinges, and opening system, and pay attention to how the door moves.

If you have a garage door opener, does it open and close smoothly? Is everything aligned properly? Is your garage door making an unusual noise?

It’s a good idea to call in professionals for more in-depth checks, even if you’re conducting basic inspections.

At KangarooGD, our technicians specialise in identifying potential issues before they become bigger problems. Our team is highly experienced in Sydney garage door repairs and garage door maintenance so we can catch hidden problems, like worn-out garage door automatic openers or misaligned tracks.

2. Keep Your Garage Door Lubricated

Lots of Sydney homes are close to the water and exposure to the salt air can be harmful over time. Our team at KangarooGD strongly recommends keeping all moving parts lubricated. This might include garage door springs, hinges and metal parts. We recommend doing this every 6 months with a product like WD-40, available at your local Hardware Stores like Bunnings. This can help keep everything running smoothly and potentially avoid the need for future garage door repairs. Even if you’re lubricating your garage door often, we still highly recommend regular maintenance for your garage door.

3 . Tighten Loose Hardware on your Garage Door

Whether you use your garage door daily or only occasionally, vibrations can cause hardware to loosen over time. Use a socket wrench to tighten any nuts and bolts, paying close attention to tracks, hinges, and the automatic garage door opener.

If you come across anything that looks tricky or looks like it requires specialised tools, it’s best to contact the experts at KangarooGD, who can provide you with professional Sydney garage door repairs

4. Test your Automatic Garage Door Opener and Remotes

If you have an automatic garage door, it’s important your garage door opener is working correctly. Test all your garage door remote controls and wall buttons to make sure they work properly. We also recommend testing the manual release as well. See here for our How-To guide on using the manual release for your garage door.

If your garage door opener is making a strange noise, or your garage door is struggling to open or close, it’s time to call in the team at KangarooGD. Our technicians can check that the travel limit is set correctly on our garage door opener, and reset the garage door opener if required.

5. Test the Safety Beams

If your garage door is fitted with safety beams (we highly recommend this!) make sure you test them often. Safety beams will detect any obstructions and stop the door before it hits. If everything is working properly, the door should immediately stop and reverse direction when it detects the obstruction.

If the safety beams or the auto-reverse isn’t functioning as it should, don’t delay in getting it checked. Contact our team to ensure your Sydney garage door remains safe for your family and pets.
